(국영문 동시배포) 「한국의 장 담그기 문화」, 유네스코 무형유산위원회 평가에서 ‘등재 권고’

국가유산청(청장 최응천)이 유네스코 인류무형유산 대표목록(Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity)으로 등재 신청한 「한국의 장 담그기 문화(Knowledge, beliefs and practices related to jang making in the Republic of Korea)」가 5일 오전 8시(현지시간 5일 자정) 공개된 유네스코 무형유산위원회 산하 평가기구(Evaluation Body)의 심사결과, ‘등재 권고’ 판정을 받았다.

유네스코 무형유산위원회 산하 평가기구는 이번에 총 58건의 대표목록 등재신청서를 심사하여 우리나라의 「한국의 장 담그기 문화」를 포함해 총 57건에 대해서 ‘등재’를 권고했고, 1건에 대해서는 ‘정보보완’을 권고하였다. 이번 심사 결과는 유네스코 무형유산 누리집(https://ich.unesco.org/en/19com)을 통해서 공개되었다.
* 평가기구는 등재 신청된 유산을 평가해 그 결과를 ‘등재’(inscribe), ‘정보보완(등재 보류)’(refer), ‘등재 불가’(not to inscribe)로 구분하여 무형유산보호 정부간위원회에 권고하는데, 이러한 권고 내용은 유네스코 무형유산보호 정부간위원회의 검토를 통해 최종 등재 결정에 반영됨.

「한국의 장 담그기 문화」가 이번에 ‘등재 권고’를 받게 되면서 오는 12월 2일부터 12월 7일까지 파라과이 아순시온에서 개최되는 제19차 무형유산보호 정부간위원회의 최종 결정에도 긍정적인 영향을 끼칠 것으로 보인다.

현재 한국은 22개 종목의 인류무형유산을 보유하고 있으며, 「한국의 장 담그기 문화」가 최종 등재되면 총 23개 종목의 인류무형유산을 보유하게 된다.

한편, 북한의 「조선옷차림풍습(Custom of Korean costume: traditional knowledge, skills and social practices in the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea)」도 등재를 권고 받았다. 북한은 현재 「아리랑」(2014년), 「김치담그기」(2015년), 「씨름」(2018년 / 남북공동등재), 「평양냉면」(2022년)이 등재되어 있으며, 이번에 「조선옷차림풍습」이 등재된다면 총 5개 종목의 인류무형유산을 보유하게 된다.

“Knowledge, beliefs, and practices related to jang-making in the Republic of Korea” has been recommended for inscription on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity by a consultative body (known as the Evaluation Body) of the Intergovernmental Committee for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage. The recommendation was made public at 8:00 a.m. on November 5 (at midnight on November 5 local time in Paris).

The Evaluation Body examined 58 files nominated for inscription on the Representative List. In its evaluation report, published on the UNESCO website (https://ich.unesco.org/en/19com), the Evaluation Body recommends that the Committee inscribe 57 nominations including jang-making on the Representative List and refer 1 nomination to the submitting States Parties.

A final decision on jang-making tradition and other nominations will be made at the 19th session of the Committee to be held in Asuncion, Paraguay from December 2 to December 7 in 2024.
Inscription of jang-making will increase the number of elements the Republic of Korea has on the Representative List from the current 22 to 23.
Further, “Custom of Korean Costume: traditional knowledge, skills and social practices in the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea” submitted by the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea, was also recommended for inscription on the Representative List. The Democratic People’s Republic of Korea currently has four elements entered onto the Representative List (Arirang folk song in 2014; tradition of kimchi-making in 2015; traditional Korean wrestling (joint inscription by ROK and DPRK) in 2018; and Pyongyang Raengmyon custom in 2022). With the inscription of “Custom of Korean Costume”, DPRK’s total number of inscriptions on the Representative List will reach five.
