국가유산청 국립고궁박물관(관장 배민성)은 9월 16일부터 2027년 1월 4일까지 프랑스 파리 국립기메동양박물관(Musée Guimet)*에서 열리는 《착시의 지식, 한국: 18~20세기(Trompe-l'oeil Knowledge, Korea (18th-20th Century))》 특별전에 '책가도 병풍' 1점을 출품한다.

국립기메동양박물관은 2026년을 '한국의 해(Une année K-arrément Corée!)'로 지정하여 관련 전시를 진행 중이다. 이번 특별전은 18세기 후반 정조 대에 서양의 원근법과 조선의 전통이 결합해 발전한 회화 양식인 '책거리'를 주제로 한다. 국립고궁박물관은 <책가도 병풍> 1점을 출품해 당시 궁중의 서책과 기물 문화를 현지에 소개한다. 참고로, <책가도 병풍>은 서가를 중심으로 쌓여있는 서책으로 구성된 병풍으로, 조선 왕실의 학문과 배움을 상징하는 귀중한 유물이다.

이번 전시는 총 4부로 구성되며, 국립고궁박물관의 <책가도 병풍>은 1부 '18세기 조선의 지식과 책가도'에 소개된다. 1부에서는 책과 지식을 중시한 18세기 조선의 문화를 조명하고, 정조가 1791년 어좌(임금이 앉는 자리) 뒤에 책가도 병풍을 설치하고 책가도 제작을 장려한 배경을 소개한다.

앞서 국립고궁박물관은 올해 상반기(3.18.~7.6.) 기메 박물관에서 개최된 《K-Beauty (한국의 미)》 특별전에 <나전장생문빗점>, <백자청화연당초문합> 등의 왕실유산 26점을 출품하여 조선 왕실의 미용 문화를 소개한 바 있다. 이번에 출품한 <책가도 병풍>은 2017년 싱가포르 아시아문명박물관 특별전에 이어 유럽에는 처음 소개되는 것으로, 상반기 전시에 이어 하반기에도 책가도를 통해 조선왕실의 문화를 지속적으로 알릴 예정이다.

국가유산청 국립고궁박물관은 앞으로도 국외 박물관과의 교류 및 전시 출품을 추진하여 우리 국가유산을 국외에 지속적으로 알려 나갈 계획이다.

The National Palace Museum of Korea (Director General Bae Min-seong), a part of the Korea Heritage Service, will lend the "Folding Screen of Chaekgado" to "Trompe-l'oeil Knowledge, Korea (18th-20th Century)," a special exhibition running at the Musée Guimet* in Paris, France from September 16, 2026 to January 4, 2027.

The Musée Guimet has named 2026 the "Year of Korea" (Une année K-arrément Corée!) and is hosting a series of Korea-focused exhibitions throughout the year. This special exhibition centers on chaekgeori, a genre of painting that was developed during the reign of King Jeongjo in the late eighteenth century by combining Western perspective with Joseon's artistic traditions. The National Palace Museum of Korea's loan will offer visitors in France a glimpse into the culture surrounding books and scholarly objects at the Joseon royal court. Depicting shelves stacked with books, the screen is a significant artifact that reflects the royal court's emphasis on scholarship and learning.

The exhibition is divided into four sections, with the National Palace Museum of Korea's "Folding Screen of Books and Scholars' Utensils" featured in Section 1. "Knowledge and Chaekgado in Eighteenth-Century Joseon." This section highlights the value placed on books and learning in eighteenth-century Joseon and explains the background to King Jeongjo's decision to install a chaekgado screen behind his throne in 1791 and encourage the production of paintings in this genre.

Earlier this year, the National Palace Museum of Korea lent twenty-six royal artifacts—including a "Comb and Mirror Case with Mother-of-Pearl Inlay and Longevity Designs" and a "White Porcelain Lidded Bowl with Lotus and Scroll Design in Underglaze Cobalt Blue"—to the Musée Guimet's special exhibition titled "K-Beauty (The Beauty of Korea)" (March 18–July 6), introducing visitors to the culture of beauty promoted by the Joseon royal court. The "Folding Screen of Books and Scholars' Utensils," previously displayed at a special exhibition at Singapore's Asian Civilisations Museum in 2017, will now make its European debut. Building on the K-Beauty exhibition held earlier this year, the museum will continue introducing European audiences to the culture of the Joseon royal court in the form of this chaekgado screen.

The National Palace Museum of Korea will continue partnering with museums abroad and lending items from its collection to international exhibitions to share Korea's national heritage with audiences worldwide.
