동사가 명사를 수식할 때 미래지향적 의미일 때는 to부정사로, 현재·과거지향적 의미일 때는 현재분사(∼ing:능동, 진행), 과거분사 (∼ed:수동, 완료)를 쓴다. 시험에서는 주로 분사가 명사를 수식하는 용법이 나온다.

명사를 수식하는 동사가 타동사인데 목적어가 없으면 수동형으로 하고, 목적어가 있으면 현재분사형으로 한다. 자동사의 경우는 무조건 현재분사형(∼ing)으로 한다.

I received a letter informing me of the death of Mr.Jones.

명사+∼ing+명사(타동사 inform 뒤에 목적어 me가 있음)

We are going to talk about the problems discussed at the meeting.

명사+∼ed+목적어 없음(타동사 discuss 뒤에 목적어 없음)

The cat sleeping by the piano seems to be very sick.

명사+∼ing(sleep은 자동사 이므로 무조건 ing)
