The National Research Institute of Cultural Heritage (Acting Director General Kwak Soo cheol; hereafter, NRICH), under the Korea Heritage Service, has identified the remains of a mosaic-floored structure dating to the Hellenistic period (323–30 B.C.) and four successive cultural layers at the Kültepe site in Kayseri, Türkiye, where it is conducting joint archaeological investigations with the Ministry of Culture and Tourism of the Republic of Türkiye and Ankara University. The remains, believed to be those of a building, are the first of their kind from the Hellenistic period to be identified at Kültepe since excavations began in 1948.

Kültepe was one of the major political, economic, and cultural centers of ancient Anatolia and is known for archaeological evidence of the Kingdom of Kaneš (Nesha) and the activities of Old Assyrian merchants during the Bronze Age. However, previous excavations and research have focused mainly on the Bronze Age, leaving the site's formation and transformation during the subsequent Hellenistic period insufficiently understood.

* Kültepe–Kaneš Site: An ancient urban site that flourished from around the third millennium B.C. through the Roman period. It was the capital of the Kingdom of Kaneš (Nesha) before the rise of the Hittite Empire and is known as a birthplace of Hittite culture. The Upper City contained palaces and temples, while the Lower Town was home to the karum, a commercial center and residential quarter. More than 23,500 cuneiform clay tablets discovered at the site are inscribed on UNESCO's Memory of the World Register. Kültepe was added to UNESCO's World Heritage Tentative List in 2014, although only approximately 3 percent of the site has been excavated to date.

Since 2025, a joint research team from NRICH and Ankara University has been excavating east of Waršama Palace. During the investigation, the team identified the remains of a mosaic-floored structure believed to be those of a building. A corner of the structure was identified, and the surviving portion measures approximately 1.63 m east–west by 1.65 m north–south. Related traces found nearby suggest that the original extent was larger than the portion currently preserved.

The team also examined the floor's construction technique in detail. The ground was first leveled and a foundation of broken stone and fine soil was prepared, followed by a layer of small river pebbles. The floor surface was then finished with pottery sherds, lime, and other materials. These findings provide new evidence for understanding Hellenistic-period building techniques at Kültepe, where research has concentrated on Bronze Age culture.

The investigation also identified four successive cultural layers dating to the Hellenistic period. Beyond the discovery of a single archaeological feature, this finding is significant for understanding changes at the site and patterns of spatial use during that period. Through continued Korea–Türkiye joint research, comprehensive analysis of artifacts recovered from each layer and changes in archaeological features is expected to provide a basis for establishing the Hellenistic-period chronology of Kültepe and distinguishing its cultural layers. Researchers specializing in paleoenvironmental studies and conservation, as well as archaeology, have participated from the early stages, examining the ancient environment and scientific methods for analyzing the excavated remains. Going forward, NRICH plans to expand this multidisciplinary research to architectural studies and digital reconstruction of the site and use the results as baseline data for the systematic conservation and management of the site, as well as for exhibitions and other uses.

Building on these joint research achievements, NRICH signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on October 27 with the General Directorate of Cultural Heritage and Museums (Deputy Director General Bülent Gönültaş), under the Ministry of Culture and Tourism of the Republic of Türkiye, to expand sustained cooperation through special exhibitions and academic exchange. NRICH also presented the progress of the joint investigation and its future plans to the media. In particular, through the MoU, the two institutions agreed to cooperate on a special exhibition at the National Palace Museum of Korea in 2027 to commemorate the 70th anniversary of diplomatic relations and introduce Türkiye's culture to audiences in Korea. Alongside the findings from the joint investigations at Kültepe, the exhibition is expected to feature cuneiform clay tablets excavated at the site that shed light on trade and daily life in ancient Anatolia approximately 4,000 years ago.

Drawing on its expertise in cultural heritage investigation and research, NRICH will continue to promote international exchange and cooperation with Türkiye while sharing the outcomes with the public through exhibitions, academic exchange, and other channels.
